The Senate has failed to override President Joe Biden’s veto of two resolutions aimed at overturning expanded protections for two animal species under the Endangered Species Act.

Senators failed to hit the two-thirds threshold needed to override Biden’s vetoes of resolutions targeting the lesser prairie-chicken and the northern long-eared bat.

Backers of the resolutions, led principally by Republicans, have said the lesser prairie-chicken protections impede oil and gas development, while those for the bat restrict logging and other land uses.

Senators who didn’t vote on either resolution: Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio), Bill Cassidy (R-La.), Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.), Mitt Romney (R-Utah), Tim Scott (R-S.C.), Tina Smith (D-Minn.) and Debbie Stabenow (D-Mich.). Sen. J.D. Vance (R-Ohio) didn’t vote on the bat resolution.
