Supreme Court Justice Alito Blasts Endless Counting of Mail-in Ballots (AUDIO)

The US Supreme Court on Monday is hearing oral arguments on a challenge to mail-in ballots.
The lawsuit challenging the mail-ballots was filed by the Republican National Committee and the Libertarian Party of Mississippi.
Conservative Justice Samuel Alito blasted the endless counting of mail-in ballots.
“We have lots of phrases that involve two words, the second of which is ‘day.’ Labor Day, Memorial Day, George Washington’s birthday, Independence Day, birthday, and Election Day,” Alito said.
“They are all particular days. So if we start with that, if I have nothing more to look at than the phrase ‘Election Day,’ I think this is the day in which everything is going to take place,” Alito added.

The other justices appeared skeptical during the oral arguments.
“Chief Justice John Roberts and Justice Amy Coney Barrett, meanwhile, each asked questions indicating they were concerned about how a decision invalidating the deadlines for late-arriving ballots could affect other election rules, including those allowing for early voting. The RNC and the Trump administration have argued that under the federal statutes setting a uniform day for the elections for president and Congress, Election Day is the day the ballot box closes,” CBS News reported.
The Supreme Court will likely issue a ruling in June.
More on this story from the Associated Press:
The case: The Republican National Committee and the Libertarian Party of Mississippi brought the lawsuit against Mississippi Secretary of State Michael Watson, a Republican, arguing that grace periods for receiving ballots violate federal law because Election Day statutes envision a single day for casting ballots.
The arguments: Voting rights groups and local election officials defend the right of states to write their own voting rules. But Trump has targeted the practice of counting ballots after Election Day. He and his allies argue it delays results and leads to suspicions about the vote tallies, as part of the president’s broader attacks on most mail ballots.
The implications: If the court strikes down the grace periods, it’ll leave some states and their voters scrambling to adjust with only a few months before absentee ballots are sent out this fall. The ruling could also extend to military and overseas ballots, which are allowed to arrive late in 29 total states.
