The incident took place right after take-off.

A Delta plane departing São Paulo, Brazil, for the US had to return and make an emergency landing last night, after an engine caught fire, sending flames and sparks and causing panic on board.

Delta Air Lines Airbus A330-300 (N813NW) suffered a catastrophic left engine failure just after rotation from São Paulo-Guarulhos on March 29. Explosions and flames trailed the aircraft, with debris sparking a brush fire near the runway.

The New York Post reported:

“Delta Flight DL104, which was bound for Atlanta with 272 passengers and 14 crew on board, suffered a mechanical issue with its left engine as it was taking off at Sao Paulo’s Guarulhos International Airport.

Terrifying video shared on social media captured sparks flying from under the wing just as the jet’s wheels lifted off the runway.”

The Delta jet had 272 passengers and 14 crew members on board, and no injuries were reported.

USA TODAY reported:

“The aircraft eventually landed safely, the airline said, and customers were taken by bus to the terminal.”

The cause of the engine failure was not immediately known.

“’Delta teams are working to reaccommodate customers to get them safely to their destination’, the airline said. ‘The safety of our customers and crew is our highest priority. We apologize to our customers for this delay in their travels’.”
