Lawmakers got creative as they cast their ballots for the next speaker on Wednesday.
After weeks without a speaker, lawmakers got creative as they cast their votes for or against Rep. Mike Johnson for House speaker.
Some highlights:
- Rep. Angie Craig (D-Minn.) said “happy wedding anniversary to my wife” as she cast her vote for Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries. Johnson has been an outspoken opponent of same-sex marriage.
- House Appropriations Chair Kay Granger (R-Texas) mistakenly voted for Rep. Mike Rogers (R-Ala.) before quickly switching to Johnson.
- Rep. Tracey Mann (R-Kan.) said simply “I like Mike” as he cast his vote for Johnson.
- Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-Wash.) voted for “Mike Magic Johnson.”
- Rep. Jeff Van Drew (R-N.J.) said “we are back and better than ever” as he cast his vote for Johnson.
- Rep. Bonnie Watson Coleman (D-N.J.) voted for Jeffries as “the only candidate who represents the integrity of this House.”
It comes as Johnson is poised to win the speakership on a party-line vote.
