Florida Governor Ron DeSantis was on “Sunday Morning Futures” with host Maria Bartiromo to talk about tax cuts for homeowners. The Governor also discussed the State’s budget and the need for responsible spending to keep taxes low.

The State of Florida has become an economically very desirable place for people who want to lower their tax burden.

The video opens up with New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani talking to a crowd about property and ownership. He has been a strong advocate of Socialist policies.

“In Florida, Governor Ron DeSantis is proposing property tax relief for residents that would raise the homestead exemption from 50 thousand dollars, to 250 thousand, which he says would eliminate property taxes for some 60 percent of Florida homeowners,” Bartiromo said.

“What a contrast looking at what you are doing in Florida and what they are doing in New York. Walk us through your housing plan and why this exemption lift is so important in terms of property values and taxes,” Bartiromo said.

“At the state level, we are one of the lowest, if not lowest tax states in the country. No income tax, generous exemption on our sales tax for core items,” DeSantis said.

“Our spending has reflected it. I’m gonna sign a budget later this month or next month that will represent four straight years of spending reductions in the state of Florida,” DeSantis said.

“At the local level, which is where the property tax revenue goes, we’ve gone from local governments taking 32 billion dollars in 2019 in taxes to now 60 billion dollars. That’s almost a 100 percent increase in revenue,” Desantis said.

“Part of it is people have moved here. Part of it is that property values have gone up, but homeowners need relief, and so, it’s my view that if you are a Florida resident and you have a homestead, we want that to be tax free,” DeSantis continued.

“This is really a historic opportunity to have more money in people’s pockets and to actually have their home be there private property that the government just can’t use as a piggy bank,” DeSantis explained.

“Where are you getting the money to fund government and everything else? All the other services?” Bartiromo asked.

“We are focusing on homestead. Obviously, they tax property that are non-homestead. Residential, Airbnb, Canadian Snowbirds, commercial. That’s a lot of money that they have. And so even if we eliminated homestead revenue entirely, that would just put their budgets back to like 2021, 2022 levels,” DeSantis said.

“I think they should start figuring out ways to change their spending so that taxpayers’ benefit,” DeSantis said.

“However, in our proposal because we have surplus at the state level, we are creating a fund that will be able to issue grants to local governments,” DeSantis continued.
