Google co-founder Sergey Brin warned that California is moving toward socialism as he escalates opposition to a proposed tax on billionaires.

According to The New York Times, Brin has spent about $57 million in recent months backing efforts to defeat the measure, which would impose a one-time five percent tax on billionaires.

These efforts have included funding political groups opposing the measure and coordinating with other wealthy donors.

“I fled socialism with my family in 1979 and know the devastating, oppressive society it created in the Soviet Union,” Brin said in a statement.

“I don’t want California to end up in the same place.”

He has also shifted his primary residence to the Nevada side of Lake Tahoe ahead of a December deadline tied to the tax, while continuing to spend time in California.

Brin has become one of the largest individual political donors in California this election cycle, directing funds through various nonprofits.

These nonprofits include one focused on opposing new taxes and government spending.

He has also been involved in organizing opposition among Silicon Valley figures, contacting donors, and participating in strategy discussions related to ballot initiatives aimed at blocking the tax.

Brin has recently donated to the Republican National Committee and attended political events with President Donald Trump.

He has also been appointed to a White House technology council and backed candidates in California’s governor’s race.

In March, he donated $1 million to a group supporting a Democratic candidate before later contributing about $40,000 to a Republican candidate endorsed by Trump.

His political activity has coincided with his relationship with Gerelyn Gilbert-Soto, a self-described “holistic health coach” and Trump supporter.

She has called Trump her “bestie,” attended events at Mar-a-Lago and the White House, and criticized YouTube’s suspension of Trump’s account, calling it “an abomination.”

The proposed tax has drawn opposition from several wealthy donors and business leaders, who point out it will lead to further capital flight and reduce investment in the state.

Brin is estimated to be worth roughly $260 billion, placing him among the richest individuals in the world.

He stepped down from an executive role at Alphabet in 2019 but remains a co-founder and board member, retaining significant voting power and continued involvement in the company.
