Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot Sued By Reporter For Revoking Press Credentials

Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot is a disaster. Rather than focusing on skyrocketing crime and a city that is ablaze, Lightfoot is seemingly punishing reporters who dare to question her abysmal leadership.

William J. Kelly, a contributor to the London-based Daily Mail, has filed a federal lawsuit against Lightfoot alleging efforts to silence him from questioning her administration’s failures by revoking his press credentials.  Kelly filed the lawsuit in August in the US District Court for the Northern District of Illinois.

Kelly alleges that Lightfoot, and Chicago police Superintendent David Brown, have violated his 1st and 14th amendment rights by inventing an interaction Kelly had with Lightfoot’s security detail as a ruse to revoke his press credentials.

The lawsuit alleges that, per Lightfoot’s instruction, Brown “directed a police officer assigned to Lightfoot’s seventy officer strong security force to fabricate a report that Kelly had bumped into him on July 19, 2022. Brown then used this false report as a pretext to revoke Kelly’s press credentials on August 8, 2022.”

The suit contends that the entire episode used to revoke Kelly’s credentials was false and Kelly processes video from the alleged incident showing “no such bump took place.”

Fox News reports:

The suit, filed by journalist William J. Kelly in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois in late August, alleges Lightfoot and Chicago Police Department Superintendent David Brown violated his First Amendment and Fourteenth Amendment rights, saying, “They have done this for the most cynical and contemptible reason that can be imagined, to prevent Lightfoot from being questioned about their failures in the performance of the public offices they currently occupy.”

In an interview on “Tucker Carlson Tonight” Wednesday, Kelly called the suit “a textbook First Amendment case.”

“Unfortunately, the textbook is from Venezuela,” he added.

In April 2022, Kelly joined Tucker Carlson to discuss why his tough questions have impacted his ability to report on Lightfoot’s disastrous leadership.

The full lawsuit can be seen here.

Kelly has clashed with Lightfoot during her tenure for her refusal to address the very real concerns the city faces constant incidents of skyrocketing crime.
