Northern California welcomed the new year with a magnitude 5.4 earthquake.

The quake hit about 9 miles southeast of Rio Dell at 10:35 am, according to the USGS.

Redwood residents reported property damage on Sunday.

More than 1,000 people lost power on Sunday.

I’m in Rio Dell. Hard hit. Lots of damage around town. Scanner traffic is constant. Water and gas leaks. More houses off foundations, more Chimneys down. Parts of town without power.

A deadly magnitude 6.4 earthquake struck around the same location in Northern California shortly before Christmas.

More than 70,000 people were without power in Humboldt County last month after the quake.

Last month’s temblor killed two people, injured a dozen more and caused property damage.
