Here We Go: Bill Gates and Samsung Develop Prototype “Reinvented Toilet” That Turns Poop Into Ashes and Fully Recycles Water

South Korean company, Samsung Electronics announced last month that they had finished working with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation on a solution to the “Reinvent the Toilet Challenge” that turns your waste to ashes.

The Reinvent the Toilet Challenge is a project of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation that started in 2011 to create ‘game-changing’ toilet technologies that can safely and effectively manage human waste.

“During three years of research and development, SAIT worked on the basic design and developed the component and modular technology, leading to the successful development of a prototype for household use. The product is energy-efficient with effluent treatment capability, and meets the performance required by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation for commercialization for a household-use reinvented toilet.,” according to the news release.

“The core technologies developed by Samsung include heat-treatment and bioprocessing technologies to kill pathogens from human waste and make the released effluent and solids safe for the environment. The system enables the treated water to be fully recycled.”

“Solid waste is dehydrated, dried and combusted into ashes, while liquid waste is treated through a biological purification process,” Samsung said.

“Dubbed as energy efficient, the toilet requires less water, serving as a bonus for use in remote areas, the same places where the nitrogen and micro-pollutants from human waste can prove dangerous to the environment and people that encounter it,” according to Popular Mechanics.
