WATCH LIVE: President Trump Holds Ribbon Cutting Ceremony for New White House Helipad

President Trump will host a ribbon-cutting ceremony on the White House South Lawn this afternoon to unveil his latest White House renovation: a helipad on the South Lawn for use during his and future Presidents’ departures on Marine One. 

Trump previously announced his plans to build the helipad in July. “For 50 years, we’ve been landing helicopters on grass. The grass is wet, soggy. The helicopters sometimes miss their little mark,” Trump said, noting the various problems with landing Marine One on the grass.

“Now we’re building a helipad, beautiful helipad, and it’s got the seal of the White House on it in granite, in carved granite. It’s really a beautiful thing.”

He also said the entire project would be paid for by Sikorsky Aircraft, the helicopter manufacturer that provides the Marine One helicopters. “They’re paying the full cost, and when I heard they were paying the cost, I went out and said, ‘Let’s do a beauty. Let’s not just do a piece of concrete and paint it white,” Trump said.

“It’s got the seal of the White House. It’s beautiful, the eagle. And it’s carved out of granite by some of the most talented people you’ll ever meet, and you’re landing on granite.”

As The Gateway Pundit reported, Trump showed off the new helipad to reporters last month as construction crews finished work on the site.

“This is mostly going to be for helicopters, a lot of use. You know, when they landed a helicopter, every time they landed it, people would have to go outside with steel pads, put them down, that were very, they were just the size of one of these slabs, and put them down, and hope the helicopter was able to land them,” Trump told reporters during the first tour.

The helipad and white granite walkway between the helipad and the White House could also be seen as finished last week when The Gateway Pundit was in the White House Rose Garden.

Shortly after the ribbon cutting, President Trump is expected to depart the White House en route to New York for the United Nations General Assembly.
