After maple sugar workers called U.S. Customs and Border Protection to report unusual activity on the Golden Road, four ‘British hikers’ were arrested in April after entering the US illegally from Canada into Maine.

According to Newsweek, an affidavit submitted by Border Patrol Agent Scott Hanton says the incident came to the attention of CBP after two maple sugar workers reported seeing four men walking south along the Golden Road, an unpaved logging road, toward the U.S. border near the St. Zacharie Port of Entry.

Bangor Daily News reports:

Border Patrol agents started driving the Golden Road about an hour later and saw fresh footprints in the soft dirt, the affidavit said. The agents then found four men trying to hide in vegetation alongside the road.

The men were arrested and taken to the Border Patrol station in Jackman, the affidavit said. All four men said they were unaware they were in the United States and two said that they were on a hike.

Another agent followed the foot prints and discovered the men walked through the woods within a few hundred yards of the border crossing, the affidavit said.

The four men, Ali Mohammed Ali Abdullah, Hameed Mohammed Nagi, Ibrahim Ayyub Khan, and Mohammed Sultan Saleh, were charged with entry without inspection. pleaded guilty and are currently being held without bail.

They all pleaded not guilty on Tuesday and are held without bail. They are citizens of the United Kingdom, according to court records.

In the affidavit, reviewed by Newsweek, the men initially claimed they were ‘on a hike’ and unaware that they had entered the U.S.

That claim was quickly dispelled after a GoPro camera was discovered in their possession with video detailing their trek.

In the video, one of the men is heard saying, “I can confirm you are now on U.S. soil.”

According to an affidavit, another man asked, “I’m on U.S. soil?”

In response, he was told, “We just made it, baby.”
